WOLVEY CRICKET CLUB
Wolvey 1st XI vs Dunlop 20/5/17
Rain delayed the start of play, but due to the ever excellent quality of groundwork put into the Wolvey pitch, it wasn’t long after the rain stopped before play began – with both side reduced to 40 overs each.
With weather looking to be a factor, Dunlop won the toss and put Wolvey into bat, perhaps hoping to take early wickets and a few bonus points. Wolvey started slowly but steadily, and accrued 30 runs off the first 10 overs without loss. Shortly after that Wolvey lost the wicket of Darren Barnett caught and bowled by Sahil Alaracu for 14, and Liam Carvell in at number 3 for only 2 runs. Sean Hirons then joined new captain Joe Smith-Walker at the crease, and the pair continued their recent good runs of form and built an excellent innings for Wolvey, finishing on scores of 44 and 71 respectively. Contributions down the order saw Wolvey bat out their overs, with a last ball run out leaving them on 185 all out. Irfan Khan was the pick of the Dunlop bowlers taking 4-37. On a pitch that seemed to be in the favour of the batsmen, and with the weather holding off, this target was definitely within the reach of Dunlop.
In response Dunlop again started slowly but positively. Wolvey made the first breakthrough with Robert Hawkins bowling Kaiser Nasrullah for 14 in the ninth over, with 2 further wickets falling shortly after with Liam Carvell taking 2 excellent catches. Muhammed Aklaque and Sahil Alaracu then steadied the ship for Dunlop, and began piling on the runs in the next 10 overs – putting pressure on Wolvey and tipping the balance of the game in their favour. Liam Carvell eventually halted Dunlop’s advance, trapping Aklaque LBW for 52. A further 2 wickets fell soon after with Dunlop reaching the 100 mark, and it became apparent that Dunlop were no longer aiming for the win, instead trying not to get all out. Wolvey went on the attack and scraped a further 2 wickets, but Dunlop held out, with Alaracu carrying his bat on 44. Dunlop finished on 148 for 8, with wickets spread fairly evenly among the Wolvey bowlers, leaving Wolvey with a winning draw and remaining mid table in Division 2 of the Warwickshire Cricket League.
